One of Sunderland's first great events of the 20Th century was the opening of Sunderland Electric Tramways on August 15Th 1900, The photograph above shows civic dignitaries outside the Town Hall ready to board the electric trams bound for the seaside at Roker. Here we see tram No 26 at Southwick Green Terminus on the Villette Rd Via Christchurch route, this single deck tram was delivered in January 1901. Funny how Policemen always get in on the act
